Chapter One
"What's been eating hamster-legs lately?!" Kuwabara cried out, rubbing at the bump that was forming on his pale forehead, glaring at the back of the fire demon's head, watching as Hiei walked away and scaled a nearby tree.
"You think he is still mad that I proposed to Yukina?"
It was a cool, brisk, spring evening in Tokyo, Japan with not a cloud in the sky. The setting sun gently lit up the temple grounds with a soft glow, basking the temple itself with a bright orange light, warning of the approaching night. The haze from the nearby city began to retreat from the darkening sky, exposing the stars that were hiding in it.
A group of young men sat around the steps of the formerly known; Genkai temple. It had been only a few weeks since her passing, but even now, with everyone around it, it still felt empty without the old psychic's presence.
Genkai had left the temple to Yukina in her will, giving the rest of the crew some little knickknacks and the few possessions she had. Yukina had listed in the help of the boys to pack away the rest of Genkai's old belongings, to which they had recently finished doing, and were about to say their goodbyes and head home for the night. However, Kuwabara said something to Hiei, which really set the demon off more so than usual, resulting in insults and some physical violence (to Kuwabara's dismay).
Hiei had been acting strange all week, becoming more closed off than usual- even when it came to Yukina, he kept his distance. There was always a sense of melancholy about the demon, but lately, it had gotten more apparent, even Keiko was starting to notice it. Yusuke stated once that maybe it was some kind of demon period and hoped that he didn't go through it himself.
The former spirited detective only sighed in content, pressing his head upon the cold wood of the railing, casting his eyes upwards to the sky. "Maybe... or maybe he's just psyching himself out about the next Demon Tournament. Only two weeks left, right Kurama?" Yusuke turned his head slightly, glancing at his redheaded friend, who just stood there, on the ground in silence, his jade eyes fixated upon the fire demon.
'No, that's not it, is it Hiei?'
"Kurama?"
Kurama blinked, snapping his mind once more back to reality. He turned to the raven haired man and smiled slightly, nodding in agreement, although he couldn't help but wonder just to what was going on in the fire demon's head...
'Twenty-one years tomorrow...'
Closing his crimson eyes, Hiei laid his head back upon the thick trunk of the tree, listening to the sound of the leaves while they swayed in the wind. He gave a light sigh and crossed his arms over his chest, usually he loved the silence, it would calm his nerves and put his mind at ease... but not today. Today, nothing seemed to help. The silence was deafening, the wind was cold and his mind was far from calm.
"It should have been me..."

Twenty-Six Years Ago
Dark storm clouds spread along the vastness of the horizon, beginning to blanket most of the crimson sky that loomed over the demon world. A flash of red lightning flickered across the rusty mountain tops, carving a path through the darkening sky which was followed by a loud clap of thunder. Rain started to roughly poured down to the ground below, embracing most of the heavily wooded forest in the fifth sector of Makai, a place not yet controlled by the spirit world.
Overshadowing the lush forest from high above, loomed a large glacial mountain-liked structure, seeped in a vale of a thick white mist. The mist swirled around the floating rock as if acting like a shield, protecting the secluded place from the prying eyes of evil creatures or people who wish to do harm.
Little was known about this ice covered island, aside from the fact it was home to the Koorimes, a race of all female ice apparitions who had intently shut themselves off from the cruelty of the demon world a couple hundred years ago. It had been a long time since someone from the outside world had any contact with the Koorimes, which made most people believe that perhaps the race has since died out, it was inevitable after all... But whatever the case was, the world now had simply forgotten about the ice maidens existence and that island was now just another part of the landscape...although some still refer to it as an icy tomb.
"You bitch!" A vile horned creature yelled, its hove-liked feet tore through the mud, flicking dirt onto it's clad color face as it dashed through the thick forest at high speeds, trailing behind a petite figure dressed in a black hooded cloak. "I'll rip your ugly little head off!"
The figure merely let out a sinister laugh. "I doubt it." They said lowly to themselves before jumping high up into a nearby tree, zipping from branch to branch.
"Ha! Don't think a little tree will stop me!" A cocky smirk sprung across the demon's foul thin lips before it too had started to scale the tree, but much slower than the figure, do to its heavy size. Suddenly, within the moment there was a loud snapping sound, follow by the cracking of wood; the branch holding the demon gave way, making the beast lose its footing and fall to the ground. His body smashed into every branch below him before landing face first into a pile of wet mud, mere feet away from the trunk of the tree.
The figure stopped at the very top branch, a small smirk moved across its (pale/dark) lips as it peered down at the demon.
A dark growl emanated from the demon's throat while it lifted its head from the mud, it's amber eyes glowed with the intent of murder.
"Bitch.."
Two (pale/dark/etc.) hands gently slid out from the figure's tattered black cloak, reaching towards the rim of the hood and pulled it back, revealing a beautiful (pale/dark/etc.) female face. Her (color) eyes glared down at the apparition in the mud; a mysterious golden glow radiated from them, glowing brighter with each flash of lightning. Her smirk never faded while she slowly raised her right hand out in front of her; golden sparks began to dance between her fingertips and the demon's eyes widen in horror at this, as if he knew what was to come.
"No!" He shouted and fumbled around in the mud to get up. "Please! You don't want to kill me!"
Suddenly, the woman drew her hand back. "Your right." She stated simply, making the demon upon the ground gasp. "Why waste perfectly good energy killing something so weak as yourself? Besides, I have what I...wanted." The woman grin wickedly and slowly lifted up a small black sack she was holding in her left hand, dangling it in front of her eyes.
"I wonder how much these Hiruseki rings will sell on the black market, hmm?" She then turned her back to the demon. "Now run along and tell all your friends that you encountered the Raven... and lived." With that the woman jumped off of the treetop, disappearing into the stormy sky.
The demon just stared on, watching as the woman made off with his livelihood until he could no longer see her. He clenched his teeth together and slammed a fist into the ground. "Damn it!"

"Today wasn't all too horrible." You mused to yourself, sliding off your drenched cloak and throwing it over the branch above you, letting it drape over you like a makeshift tent.
You had found quite a large tree to stay in for the night, one with a thick canopy that could protect you from most of the rain and hide you from 'unwanted' guests. It sat on the side of a cliff overlooking most of the forest, the only downside was that it was a little too close to the floating ice block than what you would have liked, but for now, it would have to do.
The rain had- for the most part- stopped and the thunder had quieted down to nothing more than rumbles.
You ran a hand through your (color) locks and watched as the final few flashes of lightning streaked the sky, a sigh gently escaping your lips. You loved thunderstorms, they gave you a sense of peace and tranquility, making you feel more in-tuned with your element, something you didn't feel quite often living in this ghastly place. You didn't hate this place, the demon world, after all it was your home, but you didn't enjoy it either. You had to slay countless people of your own kind, or to steal in order just to make ends meat, it was a dog-eat-dog world, where only the toughest could survive. It was tiring sometimes, and also quite dangerous.
You took in a deep breath and lent backwards and pressed your head up against the cool, damp bark of the tree. You unhooked the stolen black bag from your belt and gave it a light shake which made the contents inside clink and clash together.
A small smirk rolled across your face upon hearing the bag rattle. Delight bubbled up within your gut while you slipped a careful hand into the sack, making sure not to harm any of the precious contents. Grasping something hard and round between your thumb and index finger, you slowly pulled your hand out of the bag.
Your smirk broaden while you stared fixated at the silver ring within your fingers. The band of the ring was tiny in comparison to the large aqua colored stone in the middle of it; you brought the ring close to your face and slid one eye closed. With your open eye you gazed deep into the crystal, examining it for any faults.
"Not bad, not bad at all." You marveled, knowing the estimated value of the ring was well in the thousands, perhaps even more.
Suddenly, something passed through the corner of your eye, abruptly pulling your mind back to reality. You blinked and turned your head, facing the massive floating island. You stared in curiosity as a small, white bundle plummeted down from the icy world, ripping through the air on a collision course with the ground.
'What is that?' You thought.
You quickly once again secured the sack at your waist, tying the draw string around your belt. You yanked your cloak down from the upper branch and threw it over your shoulders before you leaped out of the tree. You dashed along the edge of the cliff, your eyes never tearing from the falling bundle. Maybe your curiosity just got the better of you this time, but you couldn't help but wonder what was this tiny little white mass that fell from the forbidden land, a place that for a long time was thought to be dead.
You launched yourself off the edge of the cliff, jumping high into the sky with out stretched arms, catching the small bundle within your hands only feet from the forest floor. You brought the bundle close to your chest as you did a small front flip and planted your feet upon the wet ground.
You slowly looked down at the bundle, wondering just what it could be. A small gasped slipped from your lips while your eyes widen in shock... (Color) eyes met crimson ones as you found yourself being stared at by a small, male demon baby. The young demon just laid there in your arms, not crying, not even moving, he only stared at you, as if he was trying to peer into the depths of your soul.
For the first time in what it seemed to be forever, you were at a complete lost. Unsure of what you should do, you just stood there in silence gazing deep into the demon's eyes for what it seemed to be eternity.
From up above, the dark clouds began to part, slowly uncovering the sun. Sunlight flooded into the forest, lighting up everything in its touch and also causing something within the baby's hand to shine, sparkling all over his pale cheek, this immediately caught your attention.
"Oh? What do you have there?" You wondered, a perplex look flooded over your (pale/dark/etc) facial features. You gently shifted the baby into the crook of your left arm and lifted up your right hand, gently tucking it under the demon's little hand and gave a small nudge. You pushed a few of his tiny fingers back, revealing a beautiful, large, icy blue Hiruseki stone.
You gasped softly and touched the beautiful stone with your index finger, wondering of its authenticity, but up on doing so, the small demon within your arms let out an infernal growl and rushed his head forward, latching onto your finger with his sharp fangs.
"Why you!-" You hissed, immediately drawing back your hand and placing the bleeding appendage into your mouth, beginning to suck on it. You glared down at the baby apparition. This demon was sure a strange one, he stared at you almost like he knew what was going through your mind. His eyes held an intelligence you had never seen before in any demon, certainly not in any infant one at that.
A scowl nipped at the corner of your lip. You wanted nothing more than to put him down and leave him there by the river, but you knew deep down you couldn't do it, something kept holding you back from doing so.
Your scowl slowly faded away into nothing more than a dull stare and you let out a small frustrated sigh.
What had gotten into you, you couldn't say, you mused that perhaps it was just your womanly instinct.
You gently slid your dark cloak off of your shoulders and wrapped it around the small bundle, hoping that your lingering body heat could keep the baby warm until you could find a safe, dry place. The baby only stared at you in the process and you could have swore his eyes danced with confusion.
"Yeah, yeah." you muttered and brought the baby closer to your person, protecting his small face from the wind while you bolted off, zipping from tree to tree. "I don't like this either but it seems that I cannot fight the woman in me."
"Looks like we are stuck together."
